The Win­nipeg Jazz Orches­tra, with Con­golese band True Gen­er­a­tion, per­forms music from the Con­go on Sat­ur­day, Novem­ber 11^th at the Cen­tre Cul­turel Fran­co-Man­i­to­ban. Through­out the coun­try’s his­to­ry, music has been cen­tral to Con­golese cul­ture, and its pop­u­lar­i­ty helped shape music through­out Africa. Music of the Con­go was met with enthu­si­asm in Europe as well, par­tic­u­lar­ly in France, which became a hub for many pio­neers of Con­golese music. Yet the music is under­ap­pre­ci­at­ed and sel­dom per­formed in North Amer­i­ca, mak­ing the WJO’s upcom­ing con­cert a rare oppor­tu­ni­ty to hear music from the Con­go per­formed live. With brand new arrange­ments craft­ed specif­i­cal­ly for this con­cert, the Win­nipeg Jazz Orches­tra explores joy­ous, ener­getic music, both old and new, from the Con­go. and fea­tur­ing Dr. Hen­ry band­leader Hen­ry Onwuchek­wa and sax­o­phon­ist / vocal­ist Joyce German.
