Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra presents Kwassa Kwassa: Music and Dance of the Congo
The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, with Congolese band True Generation, performs music from the Congo on Saturday, November 11th at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitoban. Throughout the country’s history, music has been central to Congolese culture, and its popularity helped shape music throughout Africa. Music of the Congo was met with enthusiasm in Europe as well, particularly in France, which became a hub for many pioneers of Congolese music. Yet the music is underappreciated and seldom performed in North America, making the WJO’s upcoming concert a rare opportunity to hear music from the Congo performed live. With brand new arrangements crafted specifically for this concert, the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra explores joyous, energetic music, both old and new, from the Congo. and featuring Dr. Henry bandleader Henry Onwuchekwa and saxophonist / vocalist Joyce German.
