Jean­nette Arm­strong, PhD, is a founder of En’owkin, the Okana­gan Nsy­ilx­cn lan­guage and knowl­edge insti­tu­tion of high­er learn­ing of the Syilx Okana­gan Nation. She holds a Cana­da Research Chair in Okana­gan Indige­nous Knowl­edge and Phi­los­o­phy and is a revered author, edu­ca­tor, artist, and activist. In 2021, she has been named to the Order of Cana­da. This radio pro­gram is excerpt­ed from her address to the Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence on the Gift Econ­o­my in Las Vegas in 2004. She speaks about the essen­tial nature of diver­si­ty in envi­ron­ment and in cul­ture, and how com­mu­ni­ties are sus­tained by uni­lat­er­al giv­ing, deep lis­ten­ing, and gen­uine equality.
