The fol­low-up to Coop the Great, Lar­ry Ver­straete’s Coop for Keeps fur­ther explores the life of an aging dachs­hund and finds him deal­ing with bul­lies and crows (not nec­es­sar­i­ly the same crea­tures). Ver­straete and I dis­cuss whether his return to the char­ac­ter is to dis­cov­er or craft what he’s been up to since the first book, the role of dreams in the book, and whether the notion that there’s a bit of the author in their pro­tag­o­nist holds true when that char­ac­ter is a dog.
