On today’s episode of Turning Heads, I welcome an associate of Wingman Player Consulting, Carson Shields. In the first half of the episode, Carson shares his love for the sport of hockey and revisits his journey who among many, dreamt of making it big. He discusses the evolution of the sport and identifies the many rigid expectations that can be placed upon young athletes. Being a recipient of the 2014 Manitoba Hero Award, Carson discusses the idea of hazing in sports and reveals the reality of the effects that can be placed at an individual level. In the second half of the episode, Carson provides an overview of the services offered at Wingman Player Consulting. With its unique Feet on the Ground” approach, Carson identifies how his team of advisors not only work to build solid relationships with players, but also with parents, close relatives, and additional elements within an athlete’s wheelhouse. While components of strength and condition are vital to an athlete’s success, Carson explains that the services offered in Sports Psychology, Life Management, and Social Media Management, aid the athlete in becoming comfortable playing the sport while being aware of personal goals and potential challenges. He further explains that WPC works to encourage young athletes to become not only better players but better people. Carson concludes the episode by highlighting his major takeaway while embracing the advisory position: We need to speak to people from where they are at, not where we think they need to be”.
