Amid nation­al out­rage over the police killing of George Floyd in May of 2020, and oth­er police-shoot­ings of Black peo­ple, the move­ment to defund the police” became a ral­ly­ing cry to reimag­ine our approach to pub­lic safe­ty. In this show, we’ll hear from renowned schol­ars about how we can build a glob­al move­ment to spark last­ing change or dis­man­tle oppres­sive sys­tems and the types of shared knowl­edge, strate­gies, and orga­niz­ing an inter­na­tion­al­ist move­ment to ABOL­ISH polic­ing and pris­ons will require.

Angela Y. Davis. She’s a polit­i­cal activist, author, Pro­fes­sor Emeri­ta at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Cal­i­for­nia, San­ta Cruz and she co-found­ed Crit­i­cal Resis­tance, an orga­ni­za­tion work­ing to abol­ish the prison-indus­tri­al com­plex. Lor­gia Gar­ca Pea, an activist and the co-founder of Free­dom Uni­ver­si­ty Geor­gia; Med­hin Pao­los, a film­mak­er, researcher and an activist work­ing for LGBTQ and cit­i­zen­ship rights in Italy, and; Leti Volpp, a law pro­fes­sor at UC Berke­ley. The con­ver­sa­tion was mod­er­at­ed by Makani Them­ba, a Chief Strate­gist at High­er Ground Change Strate­gies based in Jack­son, Mississippi.
