Full Moon Hacksaw
September 17, 2020
New voices Joel Frahm and Kurt Rosenwinkle play from their New York gig, and you’ll hear a couple good ballads provided this episode, first from trumpeter Joe Gordon. Another trumpet, Freddie Hubbard, follows that and Nnenna Freelon sings a Tale of Four Women. The next ballad comes from veterans Milt Jackson and Wes Montgomery, a classic is played by the Bill Evans Trio. Canadian Rob McConnoll brings his Boss Brass and Ella Fitzgerald lays into a chart with quite the chauvinistic lyrics, a few things have changed for the better. In act two Bobby Timmons plays soulful piano, Jose Risos Mongorama has a new all-charanga album out. For a short feature on drummer Philly Joe Jones, hear an early recording of his with Miles and Bird, and one thirty some years later with Bobby Hutcherson and Branford Marsalis. Remember the words of organist Brother Jack McDuff, as he shared with us once upon a time, People wanna be AROUSED, they wanna be STIRRED UP, they want their body SHOOK, man, they want their mind WIPED OUT, you know. This is important. Either its there or its not. Lester Young knew all about this one midnight at Carnegie hall. For a blues tribute we turn to Sapphire the Uppity Blues Women followed by a regional late great, Di Anne Price from Memphis exclusively. Also gone for a few years now, but finally given front-cover recognition on a new release, is bassist Dennis Irwin with saxophonist Mark Hynes. Unknown is the new normal, Hacksaw Jazz.
