Full Moon Hacksaw

Celebrating the life, pianism and composing of Mulgrew Miller, we begin with one of his better-known originals, and keep things grooving with a new one from tenor saxophonist Mike Allan in the mainstream tradition. Hear the blues sung by a classically trained vocalist Charles DiRaimondo, then an almost similar delivery from Ms. Beata Pater singing Freddie Hubbard. Joel Ross is busy on his vibraphone, and Coleman Hawkins leads the Metronome All-Stars just moments before WW 2. Trumpeter Theo Croker plays off his new album, we hear a bop classic big band style from Chuck Owen, then its the blues: Matt Guitar Murphy, Jimmy Reed and Coco Montoya to wrap hour # 1. Heavy is the music of Northern California trumpeter Joe Mazzaferro, and easy is the mood of tenor man Scott Robinson. For our Afro Cuban fix we turn to the 1940s when jazz soloists Charlie Parker and Flip Phillips joined Machitos orchestra, from the same generation but recorded in the 1990s comes Chico OFarrill. The Cookers are amazing all-stars in what we call the post-post-bop style, Joe Dokes, a new vocalist to us, is a breath of fresh air. Continuing the swing tempo is bassist Ray Brown with pianist Gene Harris. Finally we have a sizable ensemble staying true to its artistic purity, Joey Sellers Jazz Aggregation. Germinating in the workshop & in the Grooveyard, Hacksaw Jazz.
