Full Moon Hacksaw

From the archives I called on a musician friend to talk about a Rahsaan Roland Kirk & Al Hibbler album. Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers play from the Keystone Corner in the brief days of the Marsalis brothers doing Monk and Bud Powell. Our first new release this week comes from Ellynne Rey singing Jimmy Rowles piano playing, what must be a tremendous vocal challenge and in the end a beautiful melody. Next is Hamiet Bluietts baritone sax, under-rated as he did not conform to convention. Live Unleashed blues power is provided by Aron Burton, Little Walter, Joe Houston (who had a couple 1952 hits Worry Worry Worry & Hard Time Baby), and the obscure four-string guitarist Tiny Grimes. Salsa ends one hour and begins another, Charlie Palmieri and Johnny Pacheco respectively. Trumpeter Longineau Parsons is heard once again from his album produced by Nat Adderley, with the late tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers playing on the session. Classic jazz as in 40s/50s/60s swing to bebop is featured by pianist Ahmad Jamal and saxophonist Flip Phillips. Sco, guitarist John Scofield, has a recent release called Combo 66 (Vicente Archer — Bill Stewart — Gerald Clayton) from which we play happening stuff. Then Ann Richards (recorded in Texas but no relation to the Governor) is heard at the Blue Mist later 90th floor club“the Elizabeth Taylor of the hip set,” wrote critic Leonard Feather. Her marriage to Kenton was disintegrating, and Richards was about to pose for Playboy; She would allegedly commit suicide in 1982 (though her children highly suspect foul play, and have been unsuccessful in reopening the case or finding answers). On another tragic note we Get Lost with Chet Baker, hear a new release from singer Mary Stallings, then go to Brazil with Moacir Santos and Doc Stewart. Compatibility in musical meanderings, Hacksaw was a Rolling Stone.
