Full Moon Hacksaw

From the archives I called on a musi­cian friend to talk about a Rah­saan Roland Kirk & Al Hib­bler album. Art Blakeys Jazz Mes­sen­gers play from the Key­stone Cor­ner in the brief days of the Marsalis broth­ers doing Monk and Bud Pow­ell. Our first new release this week comes from Ellynne Rey singing Jim­my Rowles piano play­ing, what must be a tremen­dous vocal chal­lenge and in the end a beau­ti­ful melody. Next is Hami­et Blui­etts bari­tone sax, under-rat­ed as he did not con­form to con­ven­tion. Live Unleashed blues pow­er is pro­vid­ed by Aron Bur­ton, Lit­tle Wal­ter, Joe Hous­ton (who had a cou­ple 1952 hits Wor­ry Wor­ry Wor­ry & Hard Time Baby), and the obscure four-string gui­tarist Tiny Grimes. Sal­sa ends one hour and begins anoth­er, Char­lie Palmieri and John­ny Pacheco respec­tive­ly. Trum­peter Longineau Par­sons is heard once again from his album pro­duced by Nat Adder­ley, with the late tenor sax­o­phon­ist Sam Rivers play­ing on the ses­sion. Clas­sic jazz as in 40s/​50s/​60s swing to bebop is fea­tured by pianist Ahmad Jamal and sax­o­phon­ist Flip Phillips. Sco, gui­tarist John Scofield, has a recent release called Com­bo 66 (Vicente Archer — Bill Stew­art — Ger­ald Clay­ton) from which we play hap­pen­ing stuff. Then Ann Richards (record­ed in Texas but no rela­tion to the Gov­er­nor) is heard at the Blue Mist lat­er 90th floor club“the Eliz­a­beth Tay­lor of the hip set,” wrote crit­ic Leonard Feath­er. Her mar­riage to Ken­ton was dis­in­te­grat­ing, and Richards was about to pose for Play­boy; She would alleged­ly com­mit sui­cide in 1982 (though her chil­dren high­ly sus­pect foul play, and have been unsuc­cess­ful in reopen­ing the case or find­ing answers). On anoth­er trag­ic note we Get Lost with Chet Bak­er, hear a new release from singer Mary Stallings, then go to Brazil with Moacir San­tos and Doc Stew­art. Com­pat­i­bil­i­ty in musi­cal mean­der­ings, Hack­saw was a Rolling Stone.
