Full Moon Hacksaw

Radio on the road this episode live and in the studio from the southwest corner of Arizona, KAWC Yuma and KAWP Parker, 88.9 FM, allowing us to get into that creative space in the hot spot of the state (hotter than Phoenix but not as Death Valley). And in mid-February the only place in Arizona without snow (even Phoenix was surrounded). First up is phenomenal singer Cyrille Aimee with her latest release, followed by a one-chord drone theme from blues lady Ruthie Foster. From there two re-releases from the KokoMojo label, two very obscure artists and titles once only on dusty scratchy 45s. Billie Holiday levels us out and Stuff Smith swings like mad on jazz fiddle. For prodigious piano we turn to Oscar Peterson, for torrid trumpet to Lee Morgan, and we have two tributes for recently departed, one with Michel Legrand. Hour two opens with the Greg Fishman Quintet, the leader a midwestern saxophonist, welcoming wild west (coast) saxophonist Doug Webb. A delightful pianist is new to us named Miki Yamanaka, then we hit the salsa streets with the Fania All-Stars, which must include Charlie Palmieri on organ? Cal Trader plays marimba with guest Geo Duke. Our other tribute to a recent late great is Ken Nordine, his head was in a strange place with Word Jazz. A professional staff announcer, he started broadcasting in 38. maybe a year later than Paul Harvey, perhaps the same year as NYCs Symphony Sid started? An obit claimed Ken Nordine One of the few to use the medium (of radio) to its full potential. Its very compatible with college campus radio, and much needed today. A couple guitarists conclude our live broadcast, Jim Hall followed by Julian Lage. Subscribe to our YouTube channel, search for Hacksaw Jazz and this weeks program 1674. Jazz broadcast history disguised as entertainment, its beginning to look a lot like HACKSAW.
