Full Moon Hacksaw
July 9, 2020
Practicing the traditionwhile we clean up and refile much vinyl and vintage, Facebook Live did not happen on this broadcast as we were not wearing a necktie and we cant have you seeing us that way. Clifford Brown was recorded in Paris with just rhythm section and no other horns, Von and Chico Freeman from Chicago make a great Father and Son team. Richie Cole plays sax on an early recording with Reuben Brown, and we do throw in a couple brand new releases like Dave Stryker with Bob Mintzer and the WDR Big Band. We hear a couple sides of vibist Milt Jackson, saxophonist Joel Frahm has a new release, in the can since 11. And we revisit boogie piano with Freddie Slack. We start our second hour with a spin from Junior Parker, then hear a Sam Jones composition by the TNEK Jazz Quintet. The Riverside Reunion band plays a favorite by Randy Weston, and Eliane Elias is heard playing piano only from an earlier vinyl. A couple Cuban-come-American musicians take center stage, Chucho Valdez and Paquito DRivera, once bandmates. And saxophonist Arnett Cobb brings us home with meat & potatoes greasy jazzy blues. Take good care of my Hacksaw.
