Full Moon Hacksaw
January 8, 2020
Ultra mellow we start with a tribute to Nica with an underlying Thelonious Monk theme. We start the new decade by reviewing the better releases of 2019. Alyssa Allgood and Monty Alexander represent Monk, Art Blakey represents Pannonica de Koenigswarter, or Nica. Trumpeters Bobby Shew and Chuck Findley conclude the mellow half hour, then there is vocalist Lucy Yeghiazaryan and pianist Eric Reed. Michael Reed, no relation we know of, leads a quartet from the drums. A dab of salsa then blues from Virginia’s Kurt Krandall followed by SOCALs Adrianna Marie, jazz ballad time with Kenny Garret, Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley. The balance is dedicated to variety from newcomer Christian Jacob, dynamics from the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, another trumpet duo of Tim Hagan’s and Marcus Printup. Woodwinds conclude this episode, classic flute from James Moody and Vancouver tenor sax from Mike Allen. Tune in so you can Approve the groove, we’ve got a long way to go and a Hacksaw to get there.
