Full Moon Hacksaw

Music about animals by pianist Yelena Eckemoff begins the earliest of 2020 releases, a lot of vocalists reminding us of the Double Six of Paris back in the day. One vocalist from today is Mica Barnes, a guitarist would be Mike Baggetta. January birthdays include bassist Israel Crosby (heard here with George Shearing) and Django Reinhardt. Now for one of the better 2018 releases, drummer Jimmy Cobb as leader with the late Harold Mabern playing piano. Chamber show music is played by veteran pianist Dick Hyman and clarinetist Ken Peplowski. Did anyone think drummer Sid Catlett might inspire drummer Ed Blackwell of a future generation? From Did & Bird to Ornette. Speaking of Bird, its the 100th year of his birth in a few months, Bobby Watson, Vincent Herring and Gary Bartz celebrate live from Smokes. Jazz at Lincoln Centers Wynton Marsalis bring in guest soloist Wayne Shorter and we hear a rare recording by baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams. Erroll Garner sounds pristine on a re-release, drummer Elvin Jones brings in Chick Corea. and for the balance we spin more new releases from violinist and dancer Jonathan Ng, pianist Aaron Diehl and guitarist Frank Kohl. My destination for the duration, checking social status and that’s what a little Hacksaw can do.
