Full Moon Hacksaw
February 6, 2020
West coast jazz with Shorty Rogers begins our festivities of varied tempos, the mood contemplative next with Bill Evans. Energy is provided by Eric Alexander and Horace Silver with the Brecker Brothers, and Bill Charlap plays Leonard Bernstein. Folky blues precedes the innovations of 1950 Stan Kenton, his vocalist June Christy is contrasted with singer Keely Smith from later in the decade. Hand-Clappin Rock n Roll and Rhythm n Blues from Red Prysock, then Diz & Getz play Ellington to wrap hour number one. For our second half enjoy South Beach salsa followed by 1960s Machito. New released this week come from trombonist Audrey Ochoa, pianist Bill Heid and guitarist Randy Napoleon. Hard bop is played by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, a couple vocalists in Eddie Jefferson and Blossom Dearie follow. Prime big band provided by Thad Jones caps our offerings. Time to refile my records, neckties, drums and coffee for another session, a little or a lot at a time, Hacksaw Jazz.
