Full Moon Hacksaw
February 13, 2020
Chet Baker says it best for starters, Jumping off a Clef, then pleasant trombone arrangements from Joey Sellers. From Cuba’s Ruben Gonzalez to blues man Billy Boy Arnold, the resolution is in the Bill Evans Trio welcoming in saxophonists. Vocalists with feeling follow: Jon Hendricks, Billy Eckstine, Betty Carter and Eddie Jefferson, they just don’t make em like this anymore. We pay tribute to the late Jimmy Heath, gone early this year at 93, with the Heath Brothers. For hour two Stan Getz joins of all people Sybil Shepherd, they are followed with a similar idea from new vocalist Veronica Swift. Then we get into some preaching from the pulpit, perhaps creeping like a cat thru the alley, from Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Howlin’ Wolf. Back to our Afro-Cuban jazz, Chico O’ Farrill is followed by Poncho Sanchez. We enjoy an extended guitar jam from the late Gabor Szabo and wrap our session with three new releases: Pianists Monty Alexander and Michael Wolff, and finally vocalist Marci Miller. Hacksaw on my shoulder makes me happy.
