April 13, 2022: Women's Wave
By 1983, The Music Industry was still basically a Man’s World, but many women embraced the DIY Do-It-Yourself mentality of the punk explosion to make their own music and tell their own stories.
Women’s Wave interview band members who describe what it’s like competing in a male dominated endeavor as well as some of the conflicts with various women’s groups who find fault with the approach and volume of their songs. You’ll here from bands such as The Slits, The Au Pairs, Unknown Gender, Wilma, The Avengers, Laurie Anderson the Contractions and many more…
The Pacifica Radio Archives took the liberty to add just a touch to this program when a member of the band Wilma references creating a song inspired by the opening passage of Monique Wittig’s classic novel Les Guerilleres. So we dug into the Pacifica Radio Archives and extracted that very opening passage from our English adaptation of this novel presented on the WBAI airwaves in 1973. That entire dramatization of Les Guerillieres can be found on From The Vault Episode 306.
