Fascinatin' Rhythm

Today’s show focuses on one of the handfull greatest jazz arrangers and composers of all time; namely Billy Sweet Pea’ Strayhorn, who toiled in Duke Ellington’s orchestra from the late 30’s ntil his untimely death in 1067 as the Duke’s alter ego, always in the shadow of the master composer. The collaboration between the two was so closely intertwined that telling them apart, even for the most knowing aficionado, was at times all but impossible. Some of his finest moments lay with such gems as Chelsea Bridge, Take The A’ Train, Something To Live For, Day Dream, Passion Flower, Lush Life, A Flower Is A Lonesome Thing, Lotus Blossom, UMMG, and Portrait Of A Silk Thread. Then there were his tributes to Tchaikovsky with a swinging version of The Nutcracker and Such Sweet Thunder, which Bill Shakespeare would surely envy if he was as hip as one might believe; or would it be his alter ego Christopher Marlowe? Two marvelous books have been written about his life in music; namely Lush Life’ by David Hadju, and Something To Live For’, as penned by Walter van de Leur.
