Fascinatin' Rhythm
A Minor Tribute To Pops (Armstrong)-Celebrating the legacy of the most influential musician/vocalist jazz has ever known, Louis Pops Satchmo Armstong. He was born in New Orleans on August 4, 1901, and passed away on July 6, 1971 of a heart attack. He was known as Ambassador Satchmo near the end of his life, as he spread the gospel according to Pops all over the world. He was a pioneer of the highest rank in that he was the first musician to begin the art of improvisation, not only with his trumpet playing in his classic Hot 5 & 7 combos; but also as a scat singer. His many compostions such as ‘Struttin’ With Some Barbeque’, ‘Big Butter and Egg Man’, ‘Someday’, and ‘Wild Man Blues’, ‘Potato Head Blues’, and ‘Cornet Chop Suey’ have become classics, especially amonst trumpet/cornet players world-wide.He truly was an original, and King of AMerican Music. Some of the artists paying hommage to the legend include Scott Robinson, Duke Ellington, The Sacdkville Allstars led by Ralph Sutton and Jim Galloway,The Hot 5 with Lil Hardin, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Carol SLoane/Clark Terry, Ruby Braff/Dick Hyman, Bing Crosby, Louis Jordan, Fats Waller/Jack Teagarden/Marshall Royal, Wynton Marasalis with father Ellis, and Arturo Sandoval. Not with us today are The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra and Jon Faddis, Danny Kaye, all whom have also paid tribute to Pops on other occasions.
