Fascinatin' Rhythm
Every big band has had its illustrious sidemen who went on to make albums of their own, either when they were experiencing a brief lay-off or finished with the band entirely. The musicians on regular salarywere seldom permitted t o’enjoy’ skuch periods entirely, to get rusty and discontented, disconnected while relaxing at home or some other outlet for pleasure and rest. Duke Ellington , arguably, had more ‘great soloists or sidemen who were widely known than any other band leader. In many jazz circles around the world, artists such as Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, Clark Terry, Barney Bigard, Billy Strayhorn, Cat Anderson, Cootie Williams, Mercer Ellington, Ray Nance, Louie Bellson, Jimmy Hamilton, Harry Carney, Paul Gonsalves, Wild Bill Davis, Harold Ashby, Taft Jordan, Russel Procope, Norris Turney, Lawrence Brown, Tyree Glenn, and singers Al Hibbler, Betty roche, and Herb Jeffries, Ozzie Bailey were border-line household names in the jazz community. On today’s show, we will celbrate some ot their individual efforts away from the notorious big band that was Duke Ellington…P.S> Ellington actually wrote music with many of these individuals in mind.…
