Wel­come To Duke’s Place ‑cel­brat­ing in part 1 the lega­cy that was one of the mosts cre­ative forces in the his­to­ry of pop­u­lar and jazz music; n artist who cre­at­ed over 3000 songs, was award­ed medals from Lyn­don John­son and Richard Nixon, received 13 Gram­my awards, the Pulitzer Prize, the French Legion of Hono in 1973. He per­formed in Win­nipeg on a cou­ple of occa­sions, as well as the Strat­ford Shake­speare fes­ti­val and Far­go North Dako­ta. He waas born on this day in 1899, and passed on May 24, 1974, a month after his 75th Birth­day, His best friends were his moth­er, doc­tor, and co-com­pos­er-arranger, Bil­ly Stray­horn. When he died, Ella Fitzger­ald summed up the occa­sion­as such, It’s a very sad day…A genius has passed” His music remains very rel­e­vant to this day, as wit­nessed o nto­day’s program…
