October 20, 2023: 029–Robert and Eric interview the leader of the green party in Manitoba, Janine Gibson. Robert asks why people are not proactive on climate change. Janine discusses why people are not adopting an environmentally responsible life as they often decide not to contribute to the energy transition and a sustainable future. It is important not to just focus on taking from mother earth—and seeing just what is in front of us. Our political structures are not favorable to help us address the climate change crisis. A critical aspect of policy is to stop funding the fossil fuel industry, through subsidies, including stop expanding university research to use more fossil fuels and thus promote band aid solutions to our environmental crisis. Janine discusses how she has been running her own home using only recent sunlight using photovoltaic.
Janine relates the history of how she became mobilized to fight for a new paradigm where our political structures can respect the earth and stop its continued exploitation. Janine is leading the fight to get more people interested in the environmental movement right here in Manitoba. Janine discusses the history of Manitoba Hydro where the development of dams caused a legacy of mistrust from the damage caused to First Nation communities. She adds, our approach to farming in Manitoba is heavily dependent on fossil fuels, including the refrigerant chain from our imported food. Her many years working in organic agriculture has made her aware of the significant greenhouse gas footprint farming has here in Manitoba and the challenges ahead. Our growth-oriented economy where more is better is leading us to destruction of biodiversity. Let’s create balance and equality in our production and implement green initiatives in sectors of our economy. This will move us towards closer to better health, ecology, and care for the planet.
