At The Edge Of Canada: Indigenous Research
May 22, 2017
Today our guest is Indigenous choreographer and dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Jera Wolfe. We discuss Jera’s upcoming performance of Reminiscence as part of the RWB’s Spotlight Series running May 25 – 27 at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. The Spotlight Series is an annual event that seeks to connect current students and Alumni of the RWB Academic programs for a showcase performance. This year, Jera, as an alumnus, was commissioned to design, choreograph, and deliver every aspect of Reminiscence, a first in his young professional dancing career. Though new to the discipline of choreography, Jera is an accomplished dancer on the professional dance circuit with the Indigenous-run and operated Red Sky Productions and was a finalist on So You Think You Can Dance Canada. We chat about Indigenous dance as a specific style, self-care and training, the RWB’s dance Academy, dancing as a craft and as a lifestyle, and some of Jera’s mentors and colleagues who inspire him from the Indigenous dancing community.
