June 30, 2021: Kim Crossley/Jeff Russo Music Star Trek Discovery
Our guest is Kim Crossley, an accomplished cutter for the Stratford Shakespeare Theatre and Festival in Stratford Ontario and the upcoming Star Trek Discovery film. In the costume or wardrobe department of a theatre/dance/opera/film company, the cutter is the person who begins the translation of the designer’s vision to the actual garment taking it from the page to the stage.

Costume 1: Red Dress, feature piece in the 2014 Stratford Festival production of Christina, the Girl King.
Designer: Michael Gianfrancesco and the challenge of the piece was to create a beautiful period gown that could be put on by an actress by herself, onstage in the course of a conversation in a scene. Normally, clothes like this have many layers and closures and require assistance to dress, but this one was rigged with simplified front closures so the actress could do it herself quickly and easily while still looking historically correct.
Costume 2: Caliban costume, body suit referred to in the interview, from the 2010 Stratford Festival production of The Tempest Designer: Paul Tazewell
Production: Filmed for DVD, broadcast and streaming on STRATFEST@HOME, subscription service available from the Stratford Festival website, link to view the costume in the performance.
Next is a selection of music scored for the film series Star Trek Discovery 2017/2018 albums by the Emmy award winning composer Jeff Russo.
