Com­muter Chal­lenge is a week long, nation­al event that occurs dur­ing Nation­al envi­ron­ment week, June 4^th through the 10^th. The event is coor­di­nat­ed by Green Action Cen­tre in Win­nipeg. This chal­lenge encour­ages par­tic­i­pants to choose sus­tain­able modes of trans­porta­tion, whether they are com­mut­ing to work, access­ing essen­tial ser­vices, or enjoy­ing leisure activ­i­ties. Every sus­tain­able trip tak­en helps to cut air pol­lu­tion, reduce traf­fic con­ges­tion, and low­er harm­ful green­house gas emis­sions. Dur­ing the Pan­dem­ic, the chal­lenge was expand­ed to include activ­i­ties out­side of com­mut­ing. This year, the chal­lenge will be focus­ing on Com­mut­ing once again.

The twen­ti­eth annu­al Chal­lenge is focus­ing on mak­ing changes in small ways by get­ting active and adapt­ing the way you get around on a day-to-day basis. This year the Chal­lenge is rec­og­niz­ing all trips, not just com­mut­ing. Par­tic­i­pants can log their kilo­me­ters for any active or sus­tain­able trips they take, like walk­ing to the gro­cery store, bik­ing around the block or try­ing out new out­door activ­i­ties, and so much more, while being entered to win incred­i­ble prizes!

The Chal­lenge is the per­fect way to recon­nect with shared expe­ri­ences and col­lec­tive goals, along with some fun and friend­ly com­pe­ti­tion. Over the next cou­ple weeks, we’ll be out on the town with a cou­ple main events. On Fri­day, June 2^nd, Green Action Cen­tre will be at the green space in Old Mar­ket Square for a Com­muter Chal­lenge Launch Par­ty with some lawn games and a chance to win more prizes. Clean Air Day cel­e­bra­tions are hap­pen­ing on June 7^th with a main pop-up at the Leg­isla­tive grounds, near the Osborne Bridge, between 3 – 6PM. We’ll be joined by the Wrench for all things bike. Both events are com­plete­ly free, and will have some fun free swag, prizes, cold drinks, and activ­i­ties for atten­dees to enjoy.
