Daily-ness: MAWA's Artist Mother's Group Exhibition
Gala Opening Friday, May 3rd from 6 to 9PM!
The Artists Mothers Group at MAWA presents an exhibition of daily artwork. Mothering takes a lot of energy, and art-making is often pushed aside. As a group we assigned the challenge of making a sketch, poem, sculpture, photograph, or painting daily for a month. The incentive of the group enabled us all to give daily time for our art and to develop our ideas in depth. Some mothers continued the practice of an art-work a day for many months. Some of the daily work inspired larger works and more finished pieces.
This exhibition explores how ideas and images develop over time and how bits and pieces can build a whole with the daily practice of creation. There is an overall voicing of Mothering, from the embedding of personality into stuffy-toys to making medals for mothering achievements.
A special thanks to MAWA for encouraging and supporting this group of Artist Mothers.
The Artist Mothers’ Group at MAWA
This group of artist mothers who refuse to choose between mothering and artistic production holds informal, monthly meetings to experiment with art materials, share and critique our art work, and discuss concerns, ideas, inspiration, and strategies for juggling artmaking and mothering. When we get together we bring snacks – and our favourite materials to make collage, still life, poetry, and collaborative art. Visit us on Facebook!
