Steve Kirby performs a special show on campus as part of Black History Month
on February 21,2017 by michael
This is an opportunity to hear All Over the Map, a soon-to-be-released recording from bassist-composer Steve Kirby's Oceanic Jazz Orchestra. It's a wide-ranging project that takes a listener from the beaches of Argentina to the frozen shores of Nunavut, with many stops in between. Kirby, the Director of the U of M's Jazz Studies program, uses both his composing and his orchestra to explore cultural collisions and connections. One of the core compositions addresses the specifics of African-American experience and the legacy of Black History in our contemporary moment.
"They Just Slip Away" introduces the shame and sorrow of the dominant culture, "Tulsa" catalogues a history of violence and disenfranchisement of African-American people.
Set in the broader context of collaboration and beauty that is evident in the full recording, Kirby continues to make the case for truth-telling, healing, and genuine community.
Discussion will follow the recording and Steve will lead the conversation in the context of Black History.
We are exploring adult themes and you will hear adult language. Please rsvp to Valerie Williams at Valerie.firstname.lastname@example.org
