The Future of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Broadcasting
on February 8,2017 by michael

This year - the second in the CRTC’s Three Year Plan (2016-2019) - the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission plans to review the Native Broadcasting Policy (CRTC 1990-89). The gatherings entitled “The Future of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Broadcasting: Conversation and Convergence” aim to bring practitioners, policy makers and academics together as allies and to prepare a context for respectful and meaningful consultations. Regional events will be held from February to May culminating in a national conference hosted in Ottawa from June 15-17.

The kick-off event will take place in Winnipeg at the University of Manitoba, Saint John’s College (92 Dysart Road), Room 108, on Friday, February 17, 2017, from 8am – 5pm.

Presenters in Winnipeg will include:

  • Rosanna Deerchild and Kim Wheeler, Storytelling on National Ikwe Radio
  • Gary Farmer and Kathleen Buddle, Aboriginal Voices Radio Network
  • Jim Compton, Adam Beach Film Institute and Engaging Indigenous Youth
  • MP Robert-Falcon Ouellette, At the Edge of Canada on UMFM
  • Lenard Monkman, Red Rising Magazine on print & internet publishing

Two sessions will focus on the CRTC Native Broadcasting Policy and the process for the upcoming policy review. Participants are invited to comment on the following questions:

  • How would you like the CRTC consultation process to be conducted?
  • How should the review process itself be changed?
  • What should the policy entail?
  • What are the elements to include or exclude?
  • What changes would be required to the Broadcasting Act, 1991, to ensure the policy is upheld?

The regional events are free and open to the public. Participants are invited to register online at www.IndigenousRadio.ca.
