Theatre Reviews

This one-woman show by Susan Jeremy tells the story of acclaimed 1950’s jazz musician Johnny Swinton who had it all — the life, the career, the family and a home. However he also had a big secret that he didn’t know how to share; he was a woman. Jeremy delivers a solid performance weaving between the roles of Johnny, his mother, wife and son. The story is told through a series of interviews with the characters and flashback story sequences. She makes good use of props and music to draw the audience into this tale. This is an interesting story that looks into the past, and the impacts and realities of social norms, sexism, gendering and identity. This is an engrossing show that is well written and performed and is definitely worth checking out.
