True Blue
This is a rollicking good time for anyone who follows CFL football, and especially the Bombers. I would say that it would even appeal to non-football fans, although some of the scenes would not have the same power to amuse or provoke nostalgia that true blue fans would experience. Beyond the obvious football angle, it is a coming of age story about four men who grow up while longing for the Bombers to win one more Grey Cup: just one, please God.
Director Leith Clark gets the most out of his non-professional cast, and although a couple of them tripped over their lines a few times when I saw them, they all deliver believable, sympathetic performances. A highlight was using the scoreboard as a running gag. The thing that rescued the play from pure silliness in my book was the tragic figure of the unseen character Charlie, whose loyalty to his team screws up his own life while often sabotaging the Bombers as well.
